When we dive, we usually look down.
At the seabed.
Between corals.
Under rocks.
Into small crevices.
We’re searching for shrimp.
For nudibranchs.
For octopuses.
For all the tiny wonders hidden below us.
And in doing so, we sometimes forget something.
To simply look up.
Looking up changes everything
There are moments during a dive when I deliberately lift my eyes from the reef.
Just for a moment.
And every time I’m surprised by how different the underwater world suddenly feels.
The light.
The colours.
The silhouettes.
Everything changes.
Light tells its own story
The ocean changes throughout the day.
Sunbeams pierce the surface.
Waves bend the light.
Sometimes the sea looks like a giant underwater cathedral made of light.
A view many divers rarely notice.
Not because it’s rare.
But because we often forget to look.
Your buddy is part of the scenery too
Sometimes I only see my buddy as a dark silhouette above me.
Floating effortlessly.
Framed by the sun.
Or I watch tiny streams of bubbles rising toward the surface.
Simple moments.
Yet they are some of my favourite images from any dive.
The reef isn’t the whole story
Of course, looking at the seabed is worthwhile.
So much life hides there.
But above us, there’s another world unfolding.
Schools of fish passing overhead.
Barracudas circling.
Sea turtles swimming toward the surface.
Or sunlight transforming the water into something magical for just a few seconds.
Looking up changes the diver too
Interestingly, changing your perspective also changes the way you dive.
You slow down.
You stop rushing.
You allow your eyes to wander.
And suddenly you begin noticing things that were always there.

Some of the best images never become photographs
Some moments are almost impossible to capture.
The light.
The atmosphere.
The feeling.
A camera can record part of it.
But never all of it.
And maybe that’s perfectly okay.

It’s not only about what we’re searching for
Many dives begin with a wish.
Maybe we hope to see an octopus.
A turtle.
A moray eel.
But sometimes those expectations stop us from noticing everything else.
Not because it’s less beautiful.
But because we weren’t looking for it.
Looking up reminds us to stay present
Underwater, there isn’t a right or wrong direction to look.
But sometimes it’s worth changing your perspective.
Not always searching.
Simply noticing.
Because that’s often when the most memorable moments happen.
Maybe one of the most beautiful views in diving is right above us
Not on the seabed.
Not inside a cave.
Not behind a rock.
But above us.
Where light, water and silence meet.
And perhaps that’s why we should remember to look up a little more often.
