Anyone who starts diving quickly discovers a fascinating world.
Not only underwater.
But above the surface as well.
New dive computers.
New BCDs.
New fins.
New lights.
And sometimes, it creates the impression that better equipment automatically makes better divers.
But after many years in diving, I’ve often observed something different.
Great divers rarely stand out because of their equipment
Of course, equipment matters.
It should be reliable.
It should work properly.
And it should fit your needs.
But many truly great divers don’t stand out because of what they wear.
They stand out because of how they dive.
Through calmness.
Awareness.
Experience.
Technology cannot replace experience
New equipment can make diving easier.
It can improve comfort.
But it cannot replace:
- good buoyancy
- calm breathing
- situational awareness
- experience
Those skills are not purchased.
They are developed in the water.
The most expensive computer doesn’t make better decisions
Modern dive computers are impressive.
Many offer features divers could only dream about years ago.
But even the best computer cannot think for you.
It provides information.
The decisions are still yours.
The best divers often use surprisingly simple gear
Something I’ve noticed repeatedly:
Many highly experienced divers use equipment that is years old.
Not because they can’t afford something newer.
But because they trust it.
They know it.
They understand it.
And they feel comfortable with it.
Equipment should support, not impress
Sometimes equipment becomes a status symbol.
Who has the newest computer?
The latest wing?
The most powerful light?
But underwater, these things usually matter far less than many people think.

Comfort matters more than trends
The best equipment is not necessarily the newest.
Or the most expensive.
It’s the equipment that allows you to dive comfortably.
That matches your diving style.
That you enjoy using.
Experience changes your perspective
Many divers go through an interesting shift.
At first, equipment becomes a major focus.
Later, many become more interested in:
- dive sites
- experiences
- encounters
- memories
Equipment moves from center stage to being a tool.
Of course equipment can be fun
Don’t get me wrong:
I enjoy good equipment.
I appreciate innovation.
And I enjoy trying new things myself.
But I don’t believe great diving starts in a dive shop.
I believe it starts in the water.
Maybe that’s the difference
Great divers don’t necessarily buy less equipment.
But they don’t expect equipment to do the diving for them.
They know:
A new computer doesn’t replace experience.
A new wing doesn’t replace buoyancy skills.
A new light doesn’t replace awareness.
In the end, something else matters
Not the brand.
Not the model.
Not the release date.
But this question:
How comfortable do you feel underwater?
Because that’s where great diving truly begins.
