We like to talk about dive sites, equipment or special encounters.
Insurance, on the other hand, is rarely a favorite topic.
And yet, for me, it is just as much a part of diving as a dive computer or an SMB.
Not because I constantly expect something to go wrong.
But because I take responsibility seriously.
Like any other insurance
Dive insurance is, in essence, no different from any other type of insurance. You take it out hoping you will never need it.
And that’s exactly how it should be.
You’re glad if nothing ever happens.
But you’re just as glad to have coverage if something does.
Not out of fear—but out of common sense.
Diving is safe – but not risk-free
Diving is a very safe sport when practiced responsibly. Still, we operate in an environment that isn’t naturally ours.
Decompression issues, medical emergencies, evacuations from remote areas—these are not everyday scenarios, but they do happen. And especially abroad, medical treatments or repatriation can become very expensive very quickly.
A dedicated dive insurance policy typically covers exactly these diving-specific risks—situations that standard travel health insurance often does not fully include.
Often required worldwide
What many divers don’t realize is that in many countries and at numerous dive centers, valid dive insurance is now a requirement to participate in dives.
This isn’t about mistrust—it’s about professionalism.
Dive centers want to ensure that in case of an emergency, everything is clearly regulated—for you, for them and for everyone involved.
If you travel and dive internationally, you will likely be asked for proof of insurance sooner or later.
More practical than single-trip coverage
Of course, it’s possible to arrange short-term coverage for individual dive trips, often directly through the dive center.
However, if you dive regularly, an annual policy is usually far more economical and convenient. You don’t need to organize coverage for every trip, fill out paperwork on-site or wonder whether you’re protected this time.
You simply know: it’s taken care of.
Part of a responsible diving mindset
For me, dive insurance belongs in the same category as good buoyancy control or respecting the underwater environment. It’s part of a mindset.
Not exaggerated.
Not fearful.
Just forward-thinking.
I want to dive relaxed—without having to calculate worst-case scenarios in the back of my mind.
My recommendation
If you dive regularly or travel abroad for diving, it’s worth taking a closer look at your coverage options.

As with any insurance, the best one is the one you never need.
But if you do need it, you’ll be glad you have it.
And that’s exactly why, for me, it’s simply a given.
